For approximately 24 hours egg will stays in your fallopian tube. If there is any sperm present in the same fallopian tube where the egg lies, if both sperm and egg meet each other to form fertilization. If the egg is not meet by the sperm that is remains unfertilized, egg sheds naturally outside your body during menstruation. So there is possibility to get conceived at the time of your menstruation though you have short period or long periods.

Ovulation takes place during the middle of your menstrual cycle, most likely between the 9th and 21st days. The egg may reach maturity in any of the ovaries. If an egg gets maturity in one of your two ovaries, the egg is released into the abdomen from the ovary, and then it is released in to the tulip-shaped opening of the closest fallopian tube.

Conception

Conception takes place when an egg and sperm meet in a fallopian tube. An egg can live for more than 24 hours after it is released, so if there are sperm in your fallopian tubes at that time of egg released, one may fertilize the egg and result in pregnancy.

Can You Get Pregnant While On Your Period?
There is possibilities to get pregnant after having a period:

If you have short cycle of menstruation is short, that is below 22 days, and if your period takes for seven days then you will get pregnant after your period. The time period that sperm can survive is seven days. So it may just be possible for you to get pregnant if you ovulate a little earlier than usual.

Some women have menstrual cycles that are 28 days or longer, but others have cycles as short as 22 days. If you have a short cycle or long periods, you could ovulate right after your period ends. And since sperm can survive in your reproductive tract for up to five days, if you have sex during your period, it’s possible that live sperm will be there when you ovulate, ready to fertilize the egg.

It’s also possible to mistake spotting between your periods for a regular period. So if you were bleeding around the time of ovulation and had sex at that time, you could conceive and think you were having your period when you got pregnant.

If you want to get pregnant or do not want to get pregnant, concentrating on your cycle is important.  A common fertility concept is that a woman can’t get pregnant when she’s on her menstruation. While the odds for pregnancy are lower on the days you’re on your period, they aren’t zero. It is important that you need to know about fertility and having sex on your period.
