The Importance Of Knowing Stroke Symptoms, What They Are And What To Do

A stroke is when you have a problem with an artery to the brain. A mini stroke is when there is a blockage in an artery, rather like a heart attack is a blockage to the heart and it means that part of the brain will be starved of oxygen for a while. This can be very unpleasant but it is possible to make a full recovery in some cases. However, a major stroke is a bleed in the brain and this can be much more serious. If it is not treated quickly enough it can lead to death. Therefore if you know what the symptoms are, you can look out for them and quickly do something about it.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of a stroke do vary between individuals. However, having a good understanding of what the main symptoms are can help you to identify it. You may find that the persons face has drooped on one side. They may not be able to smile or their eye may look droopy. They may not be able to lift one or both arms or be able to keep them up in the air for long. They may not be able to speak properly, perhaps not being able to say anything, saying rubbish or being slurred.
Although these are the main symptoms, there may be others such as paralysis on one side of the body. Loss of vision, difficulty in understanding, unable to swallow easily, dizziness, headache and neck stiffness and passing out.
If these symptoms appear and then disappear again, it may be the sign of a mini stroke and therefore this could be a sign there is a worse episode on the way.

Acting on Them:

It is very important to seek medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect that someone is having a stroke. Phone an ambulance to get help as quickly as possible, do not waste time speaking to your GP or any other medical services. Tell them your suspicions as soon as possible so that they can make sure they make an assessment and give the appropriate treatment as soon as they can.
The quicker the treatment is given, the better the chance the person has of survival and so it is really important to make that emergency call as quickly as you can. Paramedics do not mind attending to someone who is unwell. If it turns out that the person was not having a stroke, they will not be annoyed at being called out. They will be pleased that you sensed danger and did what you thought was best.

So it is so important that everyone is aware of the symptoms to look out for. If you have a loved one that is likely to have a stroke, perhaps because of medical problems or their age, then make sure that you and other people caring form them are aware as well. You could just save their life by acting quickly.
