The first bionic eye in the world can return sight to blind people
Experts have found the best way to restore human sight with the bionic eye implant, directly sending
images to the brain.
This is the first human test in the world where the device was tested on 30 year old woman, blind for
whole 7 years.as a result, she could see colored flashes, spots and lines when signals got sent to her
brain from a PC.
As to the statement, she suffered no side effects during this.
This device was made as part of the Orion 1 program of Second Sight for those who failed at Argus II
retinal system that has limited application to patients with working retinal cells. The new system Orion 1
can restore sight for those fully blind from cancer, glaucoma, diabetes retinopathy, trauma and sends
images to the brain.
Dr. Robert Greenberg, chairman of Second Sight and developer of Orion 1 said that this is a rare
technological development. With bypassing the optic nerve and stimulating the visual cortex, Orion 1
can restore vision to those also partially blind from glaucoma, cancer, trauma and diabetes too.
The company now waits for US FDA approval to connect this system to a camera and glasses that will
send moving images to the brain.
They expect this approval by the end of this year 2017 to continue with the trials and reach the goal of
the first bionic eye to give back sight to many people.
